MEET our CELEBRITY
CLIMBERS

Matthew Lien, composer, producer and
performer (sponsor
Matthew)
Sponsorship (final): NT$4,000
Matthew Lien is a study in opposites. When you listen to
his
music, you imagine someone who is waifish and sensitive.
He is sensitive in his own way, but he’s anything but
waifish. Indeed, Matthew Lien cuts exactly the type of figure
you would expect from a Yukoner. He’s a great bear of
a man with a ready smile and occasionally a flinty growl.
Matthew would have been welcomed as a VIP at the Taipei 101
Climbathon and accorded full kid-glove treatment, but he said
he wouldn’t think of bringing his celebrity to the event
without actually climbing the stairs. That attitude resonates
with the CST!

Jacques van Wersch, Canadian Society
president (sponsor
Jacques)
Sponsorship (final): NT$19,800
Raised in rural Quebec, Jacques attended a one-room schoolhouse
until the 6th grade. His fascination with stairs and tall
buildings began during social studies class in the 5th grade
while learning about the tower of Babel. While his siblings
spent their winters creating a warren of tunnels in the snow
behind the barn, Jacques spent his creating monumental towers
of snow ... and resignedly watching them melt in the spring.
These days, he is climbing the corporate ladder at Eastern
Broadcasting Company and spending a modicum of time on the
Stairmaster at the gym.

Ron
Stuart, ICRT DJ (sponsor
Ron)
Sponsorship (final): NT$2,900
Ron Stuart takes few things quite as seriously as sleep.
That's why the international community is so pleased that
he will join us at Taipei 101 in the MORNING! If you see Ron
on May 21, please respect the fact that he will be climbing
on very little sleep. And if you've heard the way he carries
on in his midnight-straddling program "Total Impact",
you'll understand why he needs to conserve his energy. However,
if you speak quietly, he would probably appreciate it if you
compliment him on his thong.

Emily
David, ICRT DJ (sponsor
Emily or join the Song
Title Contest and earn NT$10 for Emily every time you
post a unique song title)
Sponsorship (final): NT$19,740
Emily David doesn't need to keep the same hours
as Ron, but hey, she's young and has been known to stay up
late on the occasional Saturday night. If you see her and
offer her a Starbucks triple grande lowfat Caramel Machiatto
on the day of the climb, she's unlikely to refuse. Say something
interesting to her and she may just mention you on her show,
"Music To Go".

Tim Berge , ICRT (sponsor
Tim)
Sponsorship (final): NT$1,200
“Captain” Tim Berge is no stranger to the concept
of ascending to great heights to get a comprehensive view
of what’s happening on the ground. Anyone who’s
been around Taiwan for more than a few years will certainly
have heard Captain Tim’s legendary bilingual traffic
reports. He has earned the trust of area motorists reporting
on traffic and the news. And now he seeks your pledge as prepares
to ascend the world’s tallest building.

Kathrin Hille, Taipei Foreign Correspondents Club president
(sponsor
Kathrin)
Sponsorship (final): NT$10,200
Kathrin is certainly not too crazy about sports, and her
job as the Financial Times Taipei correspondent leaves her
little free time to exercise. But given that hiking is one
of her favourite pastimes and in Taiwan that frequently involves
climbing hundreds of stairs, it can’t be too hard to
go up Taipei 101!
